+ European Treasury Browser Research Update
ETB is building an active network for transfer and exchange of educational resource metadata in Europe. The network connects existing national repositories and uses a new approach based on the tried and trusted NNTP protocol (Network News Transfer Protocol). Metadata records are posted and transfered through a "News Feed". Each National repository has full editorial control over the submission and acceptance of entries, and will maintain the local formats and conventions.

+ First Step "Strawman" Namespace Requirements
This paper by metadata expert Thomas Baker articulates first-step requirements for publishing project and domain specific adaptations of metadata standards in a registry of the European SCHEMAS Project.

+ Exchanging Metadata - ETB's Strategy
The exchange of educational resource metadata between existing repositories, is the key to the success of the European Treasury Browser project.

+ EUN National Networks Search Engine
This special Search Engine, developed for the EUN by NetLab (Lunds Universitets Bibliotek, Sweden) indexes multilingual resources specifically belonging to all the European National Educational Networks.

+ Gutenberg Bible Online
In a mammoth undertaking for metadata indexers, the digitised version of the Gutenberg Bible has been placed online by Goettingen State and University Library. Almost 1,300 pages of the Bible have been scanned and placed online in a user-friendly accessible format, in both German and English. A pulldown menu is used to browse the books of the Bible, and readers can then select pages to view as double or single pages.

+ Metadata Crash Course
Why Use Metadata? The answer has its roots in the "chaos" of the Internet. The Internet is constantly growing and within this vast source of information it is getting difficult to find relevant information. Metadata is a means to make the search more efficient and targeted. Metadata allows a more precise control of the search instruments.

+ Web-based Metadata Observatory from CEN MMI-DC
The goal of this new site is to maintain and promote a knowledge base for metadata for multimedia information to continually assess relationships between Dublin Core and other initiatives - in order to assist evolution of standardised metadata schemes. This first draft Observatory identifies the key activities currently being undertaken in Europe and across the world : the scope of these activities and related work in European projects and programmes. The project aims offer a list of metadata initiatives, especially those with a European focus.

+ PROMETEUS Launches New Support Service
PROMETEUS - Promoting Multimedia Access to Education and Training in Europe - is a partnership of several hundred organisations, educational institutions and commercial interests working for a common approach to the production and delivery of learning technologies, content and services. The initiative is now being aided by a dedicated support service, fully financed by the European Commission. It's aim is to provide "professional, result oriented, innovative, flexible and energetic support to the PROMETEUS partnership". A PROMETEUS Support Service Steering Committee - SSSC has been established to guide the implementation of the PROMETEUS Support Service. The first PROMETEUS SSSC meeting will be held in Brussels on 27.10.2000. The website currently features a message from Romano Prodi:
