in the context of the TREC-9 conference and CLEF 2001

An overview of the European activities on cross-language evaluation (CLEF 2000) [see also Carol Petres: CLEF 2000 short report] has been presented by Martin Braschler (Eurospider Information Technology AG, Zürich) at the Text Retrieval Conference (TREC-9) [see also: General overview of TREC-9], and considerable interest has been shown by the participants of TREC-9.

The CLEF 2000 campaign [Papers presented at CLEF 2000 workshop] has been recognised as a successful activity for cross-language information retrieval (CLIR) handling the European languages. The next TREC campaign (2001) of NIST (USA) will contain CLIR for Arabic and Amharic against English. The CLIR on Japanese, Chinese, Korean and English will be carried out by NCTIR (Japan) [NTCIR homepage].

All three CLIR campaigns have largely comparable methodological parts and stay in continual contact with each other. The TREC 2001 [Call for TREC 2001]and the CLEF 2001 will start in February. CLEF will again cover the 5 main European languages (English, German, French, Italian, Spanish) and as additional language Dutch. Some other languages may be partially covered in 2001 depending on interested groups and existing language resources. These issues will be discussed at the next CLEF coordination meeting, which will be held in January.
